Urtica dioica or stinging nettle is a perennial in the Urticaceae family, that is largely considered to be an obnoxious weed.
The plant is well known as “stinging nettle” because of the mean little hairs on the leaves and stem that cause a stinging sensation immediately upon contact.
They are originally native to Europe, but now nettles can be found worldwide and thrive in moist soils. Nettle leaves are harvested in the spring, before it flowers.
Nettle has been used worldwide for centuries in many countries. It can be eaten as a wild food plant, applied topically to the skin, and used as an herbal tea.
